Welcome to All About Savannah Georgia
Both
Savannah and Georgia, were founded in the early 1730's by James Edward Oglethorpe,
a member of Parliament. At the time, the solution for England's poor and debtors,
imprisonment, seemed unreasonable to Oglethorpe. Along with a group of
reformers, Oglethorpe convinced George II to organize a colony in new colonial
America where the debtors would be given free transportation and lands to farm.
The new colony would be called Georgia and it would help to form a buffer with
the Spanish in Florida.
At the age of 36, Oglethorpe traveled to Georgia where it took just three weeks to lead a
reconnaissance and select a site for Savannah on a 40 foot bluff overlooking the
Savannah River. Dispite the river continuosly polluted with animal carcasses,
an unfavorable climate and a marshland that was not favorable to growing crops,
within 10 days, the pattern that defines Historic Savannah was established. Throughout
120 years, Oglethorpes plan has not been touched by farmers and by 1851,
Historic Savannahs present boundaries had been defined.
Today Savannah is recognized as a popular tourist destination. This is due mostly to the historic preservation efforts which include the downtown historic area being designated as a Registered National Historic Landmark.
